What types of Pogo pins are there?

As the core component of precise electronic connections, the type classification of Pogo pins directly affects the structural design and performance of the equipment. According to the structural form, contact mode and functional characteristics, Pogo pins can be divided into the following six major types, and each type shows unique advantages in specific application scenarios:
Pogo pin type

1. SMT Type Pogo Pin

Structural features: It adopts a flat-bottom single-pin design. The bottom plane can be directly soldered onto the PCB board through SMT (Surface Mount Technology), without the need for additional sockets or fixed structures. The needle tip is usually round or knife-shaped, with a surface gold plating thickness of 0.125-0.5μm and a contact resistance of less than 100mΩ

Technical parameters:

• Continuous current: 1.0A@12V

• Operating temperature: -20℃ to 75℃

• Mechanical life: 10,000 insertions and withdrawals

Application scenarios: Test points on the mainboard of smart phones, charging contacts of TWS earphones and other space-constrained scenarios. For example, a certain 5G mobile phone antenna module adopts a 0.4mm pitch surface-mounted Pogo Pin array to achieve millimeter-wave signal transmission with an insertion loss of -40dB.

2. Double headed Pogo Pin

Structural innovation: On the basis of the standard single needle, symmetrical or asymmetrical secondary needles are added to achieve bidirectional conduction. The diameter of the secondary needle is usually 30% smaller than that of the main needle (for example, the main needle is Φ1.0mm and the secondary needle is Φ0.7mm), and a contact force of 5N±0.5N is achieved through spring preloading

Typical applications: detachable battery modules (such as battery compartments for unmanned aerial vehicles), modular industrial sensors. 3. DIP type Pogo Pin

Morphological classification:

• Vertical insert: Vertically inserted into PCB through-holes, suitable for high-density layouts

• Bending plug-in: 90° or 45° bending design, saving horizontal space

Key process: Needle tube end processing barb structure (Barbed Design), after welding tensile strength >15N, can withstand IPC-610G standard 3 reflow soldering (peak temperature 260 ° C)

Application case: The automotive ECU control board adopts the bent plug-in Pogo Pin, which still maintains a contact resistance of ≤2mΩ in a high-temperature environment of 85℃, meeting the EC-Q200 automotive standard certification.

4. Magnetic Type Pogo Pin

Structural innovation: Integrate neodymium iron boron magnets (N52 grade) around the standard Pogo Pin, with a magnetic attraction force of up to 1.5N/mm², combined with a self-alignment tolerance of ±0.5mm

• Connection speed: Magnetic connection time <0.2 seconds

• Life cycle: 50,000 plug-and-pull cycles (5 times higher than the ordinary type)

5. Coaxial Type Pogo Pin

Precise design: Adopting a three-layer concentric structure

3. Outer conductor: Silver-plated copper tube (Φ1.6mm) serves as the grounding shield

Application fields: 5G millimeter-wave module test fixtures, endoscope image transmission interfaces. A certain medical endoscope achieves lossless transmission of 4K/60fps video signals through coaxial Pogo pins.

6. Customized Type Pogo Pin

Design freedom: Supports three-dimensional bending (such as S-shaped, spiral), irregular cross-sections (triangular, rectangular), and miniaturization (minimum Φ0.2mm) customization

• Ultra-low temperature type: Made of alloy, operating temperature -196℃ to +150℃

• Corrosion-resistant type: The coating is upgraded to palladium-nickel alloy and has passed the 48-hour salt spray test

Special applications: Power supply interface for satellite deployment mechanisms (bent at 135°), non-magnetic connector for nuclear magnetic resonance equipment (made of titanium alloy).

Current carrying capacity: 1A for the standard type and up to 10A for the high-current type (needle tube diameter Φ2.5mm)

2. Signal integrity: The high-speed type supports 56Gbps PAM4 signals

3. Environmental tolerance: Military-grade products have passed the MIL-STD-810H vibration and shock tests

4. Contact reliability: When the gold plating thickness is ≥0.3μm, the frictional corrosion life is >100,000 times
